Okay, so I want all of you out there to be aware of this scam that almost got me today. Alright, it did get me, but hopefully it didn't do too much damage. We got a phone call from a number that said "Prison". When I answered it, there was this recording in Spanish. So I hung up. They called right back, so this time I just pushed "0" hoping I could talk to someone. This man gets on and says his is Officer So and So, and that there has been a "tragic accident". Someone with our phone number as their emergency contact in their cell phone has been in a "tragic accident". Of course I start freaking out and shaking. He keeps telling me to calm down, and he tells me to call another number and talk to another officer and he gives me his badge number and everything. The number he tells me to call starts with *72.......He repeated that I needed to be sure and dial the star number first. So I hang up and call. I thought I should call Jared first, but I decided to try the number the man gave me. It didn't work. I thought since we don't have long distance on our phone it just wouldn't work, so I tried it on my cell phone. Still didn't work. I called Jared, who, thankfully, answered right away, or I might have freaked out. He was much more calm than me, and thought of looking up this as a scam on snopes.com. I also made him call his Mom & Dad (they are on vacation), and his brothers and sisters. I called my Mom & Dad, and made sure my kids were okay. Finally, I read the article Jared found on snopes.com that tells me that this is a scam. I also talked to our local Police Department, and the Utah Highway Patrol. They both thought it was not legitimate. They both said they would never call someone and tell them to call someone else if something was wrong. Now I am boiling mad!!! Isn't this the MEANEST thing you have ever heard of???!!?? So, beware if you get a call like this!!

Oh Holly that is terrible! I can't believe that happened to you!
I remember when I was working in the cell phone world a few years ago people were doing this scam because the (*72) activates call forwarding so they would get people to call the number and then they would charge up the victims phone bill because they can accept all collect calls and third party calls. This caused all sorts of problems! I had to put out some Press Releases about it.
There is a code to deactivate it I'm thinking it is *73 but not sure if that works for landlines!
Holly! I felt so horrible yesterday when my mom told me the story... well I got a message from her first and I freaked out too! Cause when I called wade, he didn't answer on the first call... so I freaked... anyway, sorry that happened, that is so horrible.
That is TERRIBLE!!! I'm so glad that you warned all of us about it-your pain is our gain!! Thanks for the warning!!!
